Where it all Started!

AMPED originated in 1986 from the US-based medical association, SMA, which partnered with Australian clinicians to host conferences and support community health clinics in Fiji. A key feature for participating doctors was combining professional development with access to warm-water activities such as fishing, surfing, and diving.

Inspired by this success, Australian members launched their own SMA chapter and hosted their first independent conference in 1995 at Kanuhuraa Island (Tari Village) in the Maldives’ North Malé Atoll—now known as the Cinnamon Dhonveli resort.

Located near the underfunded island communities of Himmafushi and Huraa, this setting allowed attending doctors to volunteer at local clinics. Over the past 30 years, the organization has donated essential equipment and provided training to support these facilities. Additionally, our doctors frequently traveled to the capital, Malé, to conduct training tutorials for medical staff at the two major hospitals.

In 2012, the group officially became AMPED (Affiliated Medical Professionals for Education and Development) to better reflect its core mission. Since 1995, AMPED has hosted over 70 medical conferences in the Maldives and another 60 globally, including events in Japan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand. Many of our original founders remain actively involved today.
